Hospitals and Medical institutions work with medical staffing agencies to hire workers to fill their employment needs. To get a medical staff contract, you will need to work with an agency. There are over 340 medical staffing agencies in the United States – Over 100 that are certified through the Joint Commission. Although the employment agency does not need a certificate, Magnet hospitals, and large academic teaching hospitals generally only work with the agencies that do it. It is important to keep this in mind if you want to work in these types of facilities.
There are short-term and long-term contracts for travel nurses and medical staff. Contracts are usually between 8 and 26 weeks, although the most common contracts last 13 weeks. If there is still a need in the hospital with your current position, they may offer you an extension of your initial contract. Due to the constant shortage of staff, more and more institutions are becoming more flexible with contracts.

In the end, it is up to the medical worker to decide whether he wants the stability of a long-term or short-term contract in order to travel more around the country. Once the contract is signed, it becomes a legal document and early termination of the contract is rarely allowed. If you are not sure which contract length is best for you, recruiters often suggest choosing between 10 and 13 weeks of contract. You always have the option to adjust the duration of the contract for the next task.
Hospitals and institutions have the option of concluding a contract early if your position is no longer needed. This does not happen often, but if it does, you will not be paid until the end of the contract. Your employment agency will work to find you a second position quickly, but you should still keep that in mind when choosing a task.
